In the Hungarian historiography the dissolution of the Habsburg Empire had been told mostly from the perspective of the major political developments in Budapest. However, while Mihály Károlyi and his democratic government seized power in Budapest relatively smoothly, the Hungarian countryside experienced a massive wave of popular violence.
